Fire Hydrant & Hose Reel Systems

Fire Hydrant and Hose Reel Systems are critical components in any building's fire protection plan. These systems are designed to provide reliable access to water in the event of a fire, allowing for effective firefighting capabilities and enhancing overall building safety. Both systems are installed strategically in buildings and industrial sites, especially in locations that are prone to fire hazards, such as commercial buildings, warehouses, factories, and multi-story residential complexes.

Fire Hydrant Systems

Fire hydrant systems are essential for delivering a substantial amount of water to suppress fires in large areas. A fire hydrant is a source of water that firefighters can access to connect hoses and spray water directly onto a fire. These systems are typically connected to a pressurised water network that ensures water availability at all times. Fire hydrants are equipped with valves and couplings that allow firefighting personnel to control the water flow and connect hoses efficiently. They are strategically located at regular intervals around the property as per AS2419, ensuring that water access points are available across a wide area, covering different parts of the property.

There are two main types of fire hydrants: wet barrel and dry barrel. Wet barrel hydrants maintain water in the pipework at all times, suitable for regions with moderate climates. Dry barrel hydrants, on the other hand, have a valve below ground level to prevent freezing in colder climates and situations where water in the pipework may not be suitable.

Hose Reel Systems

Hose reel systems are installed within a building to allow occupants or trained personnel to directly combat small to medium fires. These systems consist of a hose reel, which is a long, flexible hose wound around a reel, mounted on a wall. The hose reel is connected to the hydrant system and can easily unwound and directed towards a fire, providing a controlled, high-pressure stream of water. Hose reels are located in accordance with AS2441, in accessible areas like corridors, staircases, or near exits, ensuring rapid deployment in case of emergencies.

Hose reels are ideal for fires in their initial stages, such as fires caused by combatable materials. They are equipped with shut-off nozzles that allow users to control water flow and direct it accurately. This makes hose reels effective for smaller fire incidents, giving occupants more time to evacuate or for firefighters to arrive.

Together, fire hydrant and hose reel systems create a comprehensive defence against fire hazards. Proper maintenance, regular inspections, and strategic placement of these systems maximize their reliability and effectiveness in saving lives and minimising property damage during a fire.
